What we do

You First aspires to a world free of domestic violence and abuse and we are dedicated to developing and delivering services that reduce harm and increase safety for all victims and survivors of domestic abuse – women, men and children.

We do this by offering community and accommodation based services that are easy to access and give expert holistic information, advice and emotional support to ensure safety and build confidence to move on. We believe we work best when we work together with people sharing knowledge and information, learning from their lived experiences and delivering services that are meaningful.

The people we work with have said they want to be educated about domestic abuse and You First work in partnership with other agencies to offer a range of support groups within the community.

These groups may be about information, recovery, behaviour change, informal drop-in sessions or awareness raising.

You First currently offer three distinct behaviour change groups for people who have experienced domestic abuse. We normally deliver these in a supportive and friendly environment but may discuss 1:1 sessions where group work is not possible:

  • Pattern Changing  – primarily an education course undertaken in a supportive environment with experienced facilitators, exploring basic rights, understanding of boundaries, how to set boundaries, develop assertiveness skills. This course is designed to help understand about domestic abuse, how it affects a person, how to regain power and control and choice within  your life and what your future options may be.
  • Freedom Programme – this group is a rolling programme delivered by experienced facilitators and is designed to help identify abusive behaviours and beliefs and to gain self esteem and the confidence to improve the quality of life.
  • The Recovery Toolkit – a programme aimed at recovery from the affects of domestic abuse, facilitated by experienced workers this group is for people who are no longer living in an abusive relationship. It is recommended that one of the other two programmes are completed first. The course uses group exercises to promote the development of positivity so that the strengths, resources and coping skills of each person are individually reinforced ensuring the groups stay person centred.

Witnessing domestic abuse is distressing and scary and can impact well into adulthood for some children and young people. Children who live in families where there is violence can suffer serious long term emotional damage.

Domestic abuse can happen in any relationship regardless of age and young people experience abuse in their own intimate relationships.

The You First children and families team work alongside the non abusing parent to help each individual come to terms with their experiences. This may include:

  • Bespoke groups for children.
  • A safe space for children and young people to talk.
  • Play/art workshops.
  • Healthy relationship education workshops.
  • Support for young people who are experiencing intimate teen violence.
  • Parenting support to the non abusing parent or referral to parenting groups.
  • Working with the whole family where child to parent violence is present.
  • Individual support in the community or refuge setting.
  • Advocacy when attending meetings.
  • Support to attend child focussed meetings.
  • Support to find alternative education.
  • Safeguarding support working in partnership with statutory teams.
  • Access to health visitors, midwives, GP practices.

You First support people to access crisis accommodation and have approximately 90 rooms across 13 houses. You will receive a warm welcome within all our refuges and safe houses.  Some of these refuges offer self contained flats and others have bedsit style rooms with some type of communal shared facilities such as equipped kitchens, laundry and tv rooms – all have either a children’s room or play space and garden area.

We believe that it is important for wellbeing and empowerment that refuge and safe house accommodation is short term and temporary whilst more permanent solutions are being sourced.

Within the refuge You First have a team of workers who are there to offer emotional and practical support – children are offered support via the children workers.  When a person comes to a refuge they are matched with a key worker and together they discuss concerns, co-produce support plans focussed on goals and aspirations and may also include:-

  • Risk assessments and safety planning
  • Maximising income
  • Increasing confidence
  • Sourcing alternative housing
  • Securing legal options to return home
  • Supporting to maintain your licence within refuge
  • Introduction to the community
  • Identifying any other support requirements and linking with other agencies
