Today we’re lucky enough to speak with Jo, who recently become more independent by moving into her own place. Learning Disability Week is an opportunity to learn about people whose lived experiences might be quite different to our own. But different doesn’t mean unimportant. We’re all important, and learning how other people overcome obstacles can teach us useful lessons.
We’re fortunate to work alongside many people who have overcome a range of obstacles. Today, Jo is sharing her story and how she overcame challenges to give hope to others. Thank you so much, Jo!
Jo’s story of independence
I used to live with my brother and mum. But, sadly, my mum was very ill. When she was in hospital she passed away. Sadly, the hospital only told us when it was too late. And she passed before we got there.
I’ve experienced a lot of loss in my life, as I have also lost brothers. After my mum’s passing, I had to move out of the family home and in to a flat on my own. I didn’t like this as I was very lonely. I used to ring the emergency services a lot to cope with my loneliness, but it never helped.
I had to wait a long time to move into supported living. However, I have now finally moved into my new supported living home with The You Trust. I feel much happier, and I’m pleased with this choice to move. I’m making healthier lifestyle choices now because my mental health has improved. I’m eating healthier, moving more and have already started to lose weight! I enjoy spending time with my two housemates; we laugh a lot together and have fun.
I still have my low days, but I understand that this is a part of life and I manage this better now. The YOU Trust have helped me a lot, all of the staff are lovely!
Thank you for your story, Jo!
