Our team at Byways completed the North Downs Way to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Just after 10am, the team set off from Farnham Station ready to tackle the 17km route. Spirits were high as the trail began with a photo opportunity and clear signage. We quickly learned that well signposted doesn’t always mean easy to follow…
Our walk began with a light shower and a steep climb, setting the tone for a day of determination and camaraderie. Our first stop at Farnham Golf Course gave us a chance to catch our breath. It also drummed home the mantra: “If it ain’t raining, it ain’t training!”
The 17 km route runs parallel to the A31 Hog’s Back, offering stunning views across the countryside. We passed vineyards, wandered through woodlands, and strolled quiet country roads. Each step a dose of much-needed eco-therapy.
A lunch break just before Puttenham allowed us to recharge and check for any niggles. It also gave us time to connect with our biggest cheerleader back at Byways; Diane Trevett!
With the skies clearing, the afternoon brought plenty of photo opportunities. Including what looked like a filming location. Pro tip: if you’re planning to walk the route, make sure your phone is fully charged!
As the terrain grew tougher, with sandy banks and rolling hills, our pace slowed but our teamwork strengthened. Frequent stops helped us stay together and share the challenge of leading the way.
Mission accomplished
After six hours of hiking, we were thrilled to see our support driver, Tony, waiting at the finish line. The sense of achievement was wonderful. Not just for completing the walk, but for the bonds we built along the way.
With nearly £1,300 raised for Cancer Research UK, we’re incredibly grateful for every donation and message of support. The stories from this day will be shared for years to come—and we’re already dreaming up our next adventure.
Thank you for walking with us, cheering us on, and helping make a difference.
