Dorset Council is looking for volunteers to join a countywide network of Age Friendly Dorset Ambassadors. Our First Point Dorset team will be involved, and our lovely manager has already become an ambassador!
You can be any age, from any background. All that’s needed is a passion for helping shape a long term, age friendly future for Dorset.
This builds on Dorset becoming the 100th community in the UK to be recognised as Age Friendly by the Centre for Ageing Better in September 2025.
What will Ambassadors do?
- Raise awareness of age‑friendly initiatives in workplaces and communities
- Challenge ageism and promote positive attitudes to ageing
- Encourage older people to share their views and take part in consultations
- Help shape age‑friendly towns and villages across Dorset
What’s in it for you?
- Training and regular updates
- A badge and recognition for your role
- Opportunities to meet other volunteers, share ideas and shape local solutions
- An invitation to an annual feedback event
Ros, from West Dorset, said: “Through interesting and positive activities, we’re going to make a real difference. I care passionately about how older people can still be useful and how generations can work together.”
Cllr Steve Robinson added: “Even though this is about being age friendly, we’re keen to hear from people in their 20s and 30s too. Age isn’t a barrier; we can all play a part in ageing better.” Earlier this year, over 700 residents shared views on issues like public transport, housing options, digital skills, volunteering opportunities and the condition of footpaths and bridleways. Terri Lewis, Chair of Age Friendly Dorset, said: “This is about creating a Dorset where people feel valued, included and able to contribute at every stage of life.”
