Future planning at work is one of the reasons people undertake an apprenticeship. As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2025, we’ve been talking to colleagues about why they’ve chosen to learn new skills.
Doing an apprenticeship is never easy, but it can open many doors. You might move into a management position, take on more technical responsibilities, or just gain a deeper understanding of your current role. We’re proud that many of our team embrace the opportunity to embark on learning. Doing an apprenticeship is a rewarding experience!
We chatted with Jo, who is doing a Business Administration level 3 course, on what made her chose to do an apprenticeship.
What inspired you to choose an apprenticeship over other educational or career paths?
I actually work in the Learning and Development team. So, the option to complete an apprenticeship is something I am familiar with. I know I’ll be encouraged and supported. Having looked over the course information; it fits well with my current role. And I hope it’ll give me a wide view of business administration within The YOU Trust.
What specific skills or experiences are you hoping to gain through this apprenticeship?
Data analysis, report writing, IT, presentation, coaching, mentoring and decision making.
How do you see this apprenticeship contributing to your future career goals?
Much of my career has been spent in administration roles of one sort or another. This work changes frequently. So, I would like to ensure that I am confident and comfortable in adapting to future changes.
Can you share a moment or experience that solidified your decision to pursue an apprenticeship?
Over the last few years, I have been thinking about further education that I can do while working full-time. Having discussed the apprenticeship with a colleague who recently completed the course, and with my manager, it’s clear that this is a rewarding learning experience. It fits well with the work I do. It seems like a great opportunity to give myself a challenge in a familiar environment!
Any fears or doubts about doing an apprenticeship at first?
My main concern is managing my time so I can complete this course in time for the assessment process.
