Growing your skills for your future is one of the most common reasons people choose to begin an apprenticeship, especially as many programmes can last up to a year and a half. As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re highlighting colleagues who are investing in their professional development through this route.
Today, we’re sharing the story of Caterina, who has transformed her passion for marketing into a structured and meaningful learning journey.
Starting the apprenticeship journey
Doing an apprenticeship while working is a big step, but ultimately a rewarding one. For Caterina, the process began by applying through The YOU Trust’s Learning Team. Once she’d chatted with their lead, Andrei, it was a matter of deciding when to start.
She enrolled on the Multi-Channel Marketer apprenticeship, which is an 18-month course. It’s a designed to equip learners with the skills and strategic understanding needed to create effective, audience‑focused marketing.
Her motivation was simple and clear: “To broaden my skills and gain academic recognition whilst working.”
Marketing had always been an interest, but the apprenticeship offered a structured way to build expertise, supported by trainers, peers, and hands‑on learning. It also provides the opportunity to make a bigger impact in her role.
While creativity draws many people toward marketing, Cat is also eager to understand the mechanics behind effective campaigns:
“I wanted to do something that would help me ensure my marketing materials are effective for The YOU Trust.”
New skills and insights
Since starting the apprenticeship, Cat’s developed a deeper understanding of:
- How to design and plan marketing campaigns
- The importance of strategy behind content creation
- How to align messaging with audience needs and organisational goals
It’s not just about creativity—it’s about clarity, consistency, and impact.
Speaking about how her confidence has already changed, Cat said: “Professionally, I feel more confident in my abilities and more aware of how my work will have an impact.”
Was anything surprising?
“I was surprised by how much strategy goes into marketing and how important data and analytics are, not just creativity.”
Managing work responsibilities alongside study time can be a challenge, but they’ve found a practical approach. “I plan my time carefully and break tasks into smaller chunks so they’re manageable alongside work.”
Any advice?
“Ask questions or ask for support when you need it.” Apprenticeships are designed to help you grow—but taking ownership and reaching out for help when needed makes the experience even more rewarding.
“Although you have a trainer, a lot of it comes down to taking ownership and being proactive in your own learning—but that has been really rewarding.”
This apprenticeship story shows how combining curiosity, dedication, and structured learning can spark growth in confidence, capability, and career direction. It’s a reminder that apprenticeships aren’t just about gaining qualifications—they’re about building the skills and mindset to thrive.
