Today is International Youth Day, and draws attention to youth matters around the world. In 2000, the United Nations designated 12 August International Youth Day. And since then it’s become a popular, and fun day to raise awareness. This year’s theme is Youth Empowerment for a Sustainable Future.
At The YOU Trust, we understand that opportunities allow individuals to choose their own futures. Which is why our teams work hard to support the young people we work with. We chatted with Shaun Dormer, manager of our Young People’s residence in Weymouth, about working with the younger generation.
Engaging with the youth, today, for tomorrow
I’ve always worked in the care sector, but I only joined The YOU Trust in January 2025. It’s my first experience in a supported living service. While it certainly comes with its challenges, I genuinely love every aspect of what we do.
Working with young people at Pottery Lane and Wollaston Lodge is incredibly rewarding. Each individual has their own story, their own needs, and their own way of engaging with the world. That means no two days are ever the same.
One moment we might be supporting someone with budgeting or benefits, and the next we’re offering a listening ear to someone navigating family challenges. It’s about being there—sharing the ups and downs, and showing up with consistency, honesty, and care.
Every Day Is Different – And That’s What I Love About It
