Substance Misuse

If you’re experiencing challenges with substance use, our service is here to help. Through our partnership with The Society of St James, we offer rehabilitation and recovery support designed to help you move forward.

We know that relationships with partners, children, family, friends and co-workers suffer. And sometimes people lose their employment, their homes and their lifestyle.

There can be a significant impact on mental health and wellbeing. This can lead to:

• poor decision making
• an inability to concentrate
• focussing on unhealthy behaviours
• focussing on negative self-talk
• confusion
• Attempts to manage powerful cravings from your substance of choice

Our experienced counsellors will work alongside you throughout your recovery journey. Counselling provides a safe, supportive space to improve your mental wellbeing, physical health, and day‑to‑day interactions. As you progress, you may feel ready to reconnect with activities you enjoy—such as sports, hobbies, volunteering, or returning to work.

We work closely with your key worker at The Society of St James, always at your pace and with no pressure. Our counselling complements the recovery programmes you take part in through their service.

Our partnership with The Society of St James Recovery Service supports people living in Portsmouth (PO1–PO6). Their team has many years of specialist experience in substance use recovery and offers free advice and resources on their website.

Counselling is for over 18s and is offered at three locations in Portsmouth, as well as remotely. You can only be referred for this counselling via the team at Society of St James.

They are free to access, and you can self-refer through an online form, by email or by phone.
