As part of Social Prescribing Day 2025, we’ve asked a few of our fantastic colleagues what it means to be a social prescriber. Today, we speak with Amy about the work she does in the community and how it impacts her life. Thanks, Amy!
It might sound cliché to say, I love my job—but it’s the absolute truth. Being a social prescriber isn’t just a job to me; it’s something I deeply care about.
A love for my city
I’ve lived in Portsmouth all my life, and my affection for this city runs deep. Portsmouth is vibrant, full of incredible people, strong communities, and a shared sense of heart. It’s a place that looks out for its own, and I’m honoured to play a role in that through social prescribing.
So, what is social prescribing?
We get asked this question a lot. And honestly? We still haven’t found a quick way to explain everything we do!
In short, social prescribing is about supporting individuals with non-medical challenges that impact their well-being. We’re linked to various GP surgeries across Southsea as part of the South Coast PCN (Primary Care Network). Patients are referred to us for a wide range of issues. Such as mental health struggles, bereavement, isolation, financial difficulties, employment challenges, and so much more.
It’s about walking alongside people during tough times, helping them find the right support, and empowering them to take steps forward.

Why I love what I do
I couldn’t narrow it down to just one reason why I love my job. There are too many.
First, my team. They’re a group of dedicated, compassionate people who truly care. Each of us brings our own strengths and experiences, and no one overshadows another. We value each other’s perspectives, and that collective wisdom helps us support people in the best way possible.
Then, there’s the community we build. We run various groups throughout the month. Drop-in sessions, chair exercises, carers’ groups, Wellness Wednesdays, and many more. These aren’t just activities; they’re spaces where people can connect, feel seen, and know they’re not alone.
Most of all, I love the people we support. Every day, I witness incredible strength and resilience. There’s a misconception that asking for help is a sign of weakness. But I see the opposite. Reaching out is an act of bravery. The individuals we work with are navigating incredibly difficult circumstances, yet they show so much courage. Their resilience inspires me every single day.

The Heart of Social Prescribing
To be a social prescriber is to offer empathy, a listening ear, and a safe space for people who feel lost in their current situation. While our support isn’t long-term, we make sure that every patient feels heard and knows that their story matters.
A celebration of community
In honour of Social Prescribing Day, I want to celebrate what makes this work so special: community. Portsmouth is full of organisations and individuals doing life-changing work. I feel incredibly lucky to be a small part of that.
Being connected to others, being part of something bigger, that’s what social prescribing is all about.
