Poetry is a beautiful way to express ourselves. It allows us to wrap emotions with reality in a way that is unique. One of our wonderful Enablement Support Partners has a talent for it. Caryn used to write a lot more, but as often happens, life gets in the way and time evaporates. However, during COVID her passion was reignited again! Caryn started as part time with us, but is now full time. Her role in enablement inspired this poem.
Our Many Hats
Driving along these tree-lined roads
My every day at work, the places I go
Drivers rushing about without safety or care
Having to stop, for the foal and the mare.
Each day I am out in the stormy weathers
Sunshine and rain, is all that it measures
No matter who it is, in the community I bound
Contented happy clients as I complete my round.
Fighting against traffic, the school run is here
Parents and children, everywhere appear.
Checking for time, will they make me late!
My first client today, why should they have to wait!
Phone going off with calls and pings
Notifications sound, as again it rings
A change in my rota? but I’m nearly there
Emergencies and sickness fill the air.
What day will it be? We will have to see
Unexpected surprises, with no guarantee
A walk in the park or the beach watching waves
Chatter and tea, fills my days.
Mrs C with her shopping, I hope I get it right
Or Rupert that’s tired, after having a bad night
Bobby the contented in whatever we do
And Kenny that’s sad and feeling blue.
Time is of the essence to fill their days
With support and care in many ways
Stimulation and Therapy and all they need
Person centred as individuals, in order to succeed
A counsellor, therapist, supporter and friend
The many hats we wear, they have no end
Flexibility, diverse, compassionate, and caring
Are the qualities we wear in every hat we’re wearing
Autism, anxiety, depression and fear
Behaviours that challenge and the words we hear
Smoothing things over, tranquillity and peace
Brings happiness to all, to say the least!!
These things we face in our job everyday
Rewarding and fulfilling, and not for the pay.
A special kind of person in this chosen career
Helping others achieve and changes appear.
Just stand in my shoes and see what I see
The people that need us to help them achieve
From sad and lonely, doom and gloom
Is like watching a bud, flourish to bloom.
Support and to care is a joy untold
The people we support, young or old
No other job, will ever come this close
The one I enjoy, the one I love most ♥️
Thank you so much for sharing, Caryn.
