Our team aim to be at the front door of support for vulnerable people in Dorset. When life starts to unravel, knowing where to turn can feel overwhelming. And that’s why our service is here.
If you live in Dorset, our team have local knowledge that will help you. Our First Point team deliver the Dorset Integrated Prevention Partnership
Many people turn to us when they’re struggling. Whether that’s with housing, mental health, finances, loneliness, or life suddenly taking an unexpected turn.
In the 2024-2025 year we helped 2,432 people in the community with a range of issues. But what happens when you make that first call? We spoke to Molly, who joined the team six months ago.
‘People contact us in all sorts of ways’ says Molly, a Referral and Allocations Partner.
‘When you call Dorset First Point, you’re speaking to a real person whose job is to listen, not rush you or judge your situation. There’s no “right way” to explain what’s going on in your life, you just start where you are. We understand that sometimes people call when they are not in a good space. But we’ll do our best to help you.’
‘We take calls from both members of the public and other professionals. People can explain their situation in all sorts of ways, calmly, angrily, tearfully, and that’s okay. Our role is to adapt how we listen and respond.’
‘Sometimes people are incredibly articulate. Other times they’re in crisis and struggling to communicate at all. Either way, we listen, ask the right questions, and work out what support makes sense.’
‘If it’s appropriate, we’ll take a full referral, carry out an initial triage, record key information, and then allocate the case to a support worker’, Molly adds.
That first contact matters, because when someone feels heard, they’re already taking a step forward and towards a better situation.
I love doing what I do because I feel that we make a real difference to people,
especially when they’re in crisis. And being able to give people the right advice and support and just generally make a difference to not only their day, but potentially longer term just from that one phone call.
And I think it’s very rewarding when you then have people on the phone that just seem to just take a deep breath and say, thank you, you’ve really helped me.
That’s why I love it.
