Social prescribing is such a simple idea, and yet it’s so effective at helping people who are socially isolated. But becoming socially isolated isn’t very difficult. It’s something that happens to many people at some point.
The fallout from COVID lockdowns is still being felt a few years on. This unprecedented event affected even the most gregarious of us. But it doesn’t only take a world-affecting pandemic to do this. People can become isolated by moving, changing jobs, or just by being less mobile.
Leanne, a social prescribing care co-ordinator, and her team posted letters informing people about the services on offer. Margaret, who is 85 and lives alone, received one and got in contact with the team.
Leanne completed a home visit and found that, although Margaret didn’t need any care, she was isolated and very lonely. And because of this, she felt extremely low.
Margaret has so many stories to share and has some wonderful hobbies, which she sadly hasn’t enjoyed for some time. She really wants to get back into them and is also desperate for social contact again:
There was always someone knocking at my door. Which I miss the most.
Leanne gave Margaret some leaflets with ideas on how to meet up with people, and also invited Margaret to a social prescribing drop in. We’re please to say that Margaret had a brilliant time! She even made a new friend that led to swapping numbers for a coffee meet up!
Our drop ins are a fun way to get out the house and meet other people who might be feeling a little lonely. It’s so easy to fall into this cycle of isolation. Often it happens naturally. Through families moving away, bereavement, or retirement. But it only takes a few small steps to get back into a social world, but often we hesitate because we’re uncertain.
Leanne received feedback on Margaret’s last trip, which both wanted to share:
I was so low before. Since you coming to see me, I have become so much more positive. I am starting to feel like I used to. You have opened that up again for me, so am very grateful.
If you know someone who might be in a similar situation to Margaret, please reach out to our team. Our drop ins are free, and a great way to meet people.
